Every State Has Move Over Laws

No matter which state you are driving in, there is a move over law on the books. This means that when you see an emergency vehicle, it is your responsibility to move into the next lane over. While this law generally applies to highways, it can be a good idea on any road.

By moving over, you give police officers and others the space that they need to tend to an emergency situation safely. It also gives those involved in an accident the space needed to move away from their vehicles. This can be critical if there is a gas leak or other dangerous situation.

If there is traffic in the next lane, don't jeopardize your safety just to comply with the law. Generally, you only have to move over if there is an opportunity to do so as you approach a vehicle with flashing lights.
